NOMINATIONS OPEN FOR SENIOR AWARDS

Nominations for Stanislaus County’s 2015 Senior Awards are now being accepted. Residents of the county who are 60 or older may be nominated for their outstanding volunteer work in any of the following areas: community service, humanitarianism, leadership, political advocacy or being a good neighbor. Five recipients, one from each supervisorial district, will be recognized by the Stanislaus County Board of Supervisors in May, which is Older Americans Month. Nomination forms can be obtained by calling the Area Agency on Aging, (209) 558-7825 or (800) 510-2020. The deadline is March 9. FARMERS CAN LEARN ABOUT ORCHARD SOIL

Farmers and farm managers can take part in a Tuesday morning event near Turlock on caring for orchard soil. The East Stanislaus Resource Conservation District is hosting a field day on “farming your root zone.” It will be at 9 a.m. at 2118 Golf Road. Experts will talk about how compost can improve organic matter, water retention and other traits 5 to 30 inches below the surface. TURLOCK LIBRARY GROUP TO SELL BOOKS

Friends of the Turlock Library will hold its annual book sale this week at First Methodist Church, 1660 Arbor Way, just east of East Main Street in Turlock. It will start with a members-only sale from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday and will be open to the public from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. The sale features all genres of books and will raise money for the group, which supports the Turlock branch of the Stanislaus County Library. For more information, call Pat at (209) 634-3592.

TWO MEN ARRESTED IN DOG’s fatal BEATING

The Merced Police Department arrested a father and son Friday evening on suspicion of beating a neighbor’s German shepherd to death. Samuel Clendenin and his father, Tony Clendenin, posted bail after being booked on charges of animal cruelty and conspiracy to commit a crime. The younger man told a television reporter that the dog was killed after it attacked him on his family’s property. Page B3
