YESTERYEARS
50 YEARS AGO: An artillery shell that may have contained a live explosive head was found in the front yard of John E. Soares in the 2900 block of Keyes Road. Soares said his son found the shell, 3 inches in diameter, while digging in the front yard. It was inches from the surface. The Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office called the explosive experts from Castle Air Force Base in Merced County to inspect and dispose of it.
