KING-KENNEDY CENTER HOSTS HEALTH CHECKS

A health screening Saturday in west Modesto will give people a chance to check their cholesterol and other indicators and get flu shots. It will run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the King-Kennedy Memorial Center, 601 S. Martin Luther King Drive, and adjacent Mellis Park. Blood sugar, blood pressure, hearing and vision will be among the tests offered. The free event is for families who live, work or attend schools or churches in the neighborhood. It is sponsored by the Stanislaus Multicultural Community Health Coalition and West Modesto/King-Kennedy Neighborhood Collaborative with help from Advancing Vibrant Communities, the Modesto Lions Club, Modesto City Schools, the Stanislaus County Health Services Agency and the Valley Consortium for Medical Education.

RANGELAND COALITION TO GATHER IN CAPITAL

The California Rangeland Conservation Coalition will hold its 10th annual summit Feb. 3 in Sacramento. The group includes ranchers, conservationists, researchers and other people working to keep rangeland in production while protecting wildlife, water and other resources. The summit will run from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Sacramento Convention Center, 1400 J St. The cost is $100; ranchers can get a two-for-one discount. Related events Feb. 2 and 4 have other fees. The coalition held last year’s summit in Oakdale and at nearby ranches, where a key topic was encroachment of almonds and other high-value crops onto rangeland. TUOLUMNE LIBRARY GROUP PLANS SALES

Friends of the Tuolumne County Library will have half-price sales on books and music on Wednesdays this month. They will start this week with hardback thrillers, followed by hardback novels Jan. 14; music CDs Jan. 21; and history and politics books Jan. 28. Gift certificates are available.
