Motorcycle hits car, then is struck by train, near Atwater
A motorcyclist suffered a broken leg Tuesday morning after he collided with a truck in the Atwater area, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The crash was reported at 6:08 a.m. in the area of Santa Fe Drive and Shaffer Road, according to Officer Moises Onsurez.
Hector Mendoza, 22, was riding a 1995 Harley-Davidson westbound on Santa Fe Drive, making a turn onto southbound Shaffer Road. While he was turning, Mendoza crashed into a truck traveling northbound on Shaffer Road, at Santa Fe Drive.
Mendoza was injured, and after the crash his motorcycle was left resting on railroad tracks at the intersection. A train traveling eastbound then struck the motorcycle. Onsurez said Mendoza was not on the motorcycle when the train struck it.
Mendoza was taken to a hospital for treatment. After the crash, the train blocked the intersection of Santa Fe Drive and Shaffer Road until a crew could inspect the tracks.
The CHP is investigating.
