Fall is in the air and on the trees – though in the second case, not for long. Once those leaves start changing color, it’s no time at all before they’re crackling beneath our feet, begging to be raked into piles for kids to bury themselves.

The workweek got off to a mild start, and lower temperatures and a chance of rain lie ahead.

Monday’s high in Modesto was 78 degrees, according to the Modesto Irrigation District. Temperatures should start to dip Tuesday, with an expected high of 70 and a low of 48.

Patchy fog is expected in the night and morning hours; officials urge drivers to allow extra time to get to their destinations and take care on the roads.

The sunshine will make way for clouds Wednesday evening and into Thursday, when forecasters set the odds of rain for Modesto at 40 percent. The high then is expected to reach the upper 60s, with lows in the lower 50s.

The system should clear out by Friday, forecasters say, leaving sunny conditions and a high of 68.
