STUDY SESSION ON SUMMER LEARNING

The Modesto City Schools board will hold a special meeting, focused solely on summer learning, from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Staff Development Center, 425 Locust St. The study session will include discussion of leveraging summer learning to reduce the achievement gap and ways extra funding for at-risk children can support these programs. Expanding summer school offerings was one of the goals laid out by administrators during last year’s budget discussions.

FREE LEGAL WORKSHOP ON HOUSING ISSUES

The Asian Pacific Islander Legal Outreach will hold a free workshop Nov. 18 for all Stanislaus County residents who have housing-related legal issues. It will be from 2 to 3 p.m. at the Stanislaus County Library, 1500 I St., Modesto. The workshop will answer questions about the foreclosure process, eviction, and homeowner and tenant rights. Appointments can be made for individual counseling after the workshop. Help will be provided in Cantonese, Mandarin, Hmong, Spanish, Punjabi, Vietnamese and Cambodian.

VOLUNTEERS SOUGHT FOR RIVER CLEANUP

Operation 9-2-99 is a monthly volunteer effort to clean up the banks of the Tuolumne River in Modesto. It is in need of volunteers for three hours – 9 a.m. to noon – on Nov. 15 and Dec. 13 to remove garbage and debris – tires, shopping carts and more – from the south bank under Highway 99 at Zeff Road. Volunteers should bring gloves and water, and wear sturdy shoes. All other cleanup supplies will be provided. Volunteers must sign a liability form; those under 18 need a parent’s signature.
