WALNUT THEFT RULES KICK IN FOR FIRST TIME

Stanislaus County’s walnut-buying period starts Tuesday, part of an ordinance adopted in July to deter theft of the valuable crop. It aims to keep thieves from scooping up the newly harvest nuts from orchard floors and selling them without permission. During the buying period, which will run to April 30, non-processing walnut buying operations within the county may lawfully purchase and receive nuts that have not been dried or processed, Agricultural Commissioner Milton O’Haire said. Non-processing buyers must register with his office before buying walnuts. Any person selling less than 2,000 pounds must show proof of ownership at the time of sale. The rules are in addition to those that govern the bulk of the industry, including several large processors. They are not aimed at walnuts that will not enter commerce. The county is one of the leading producers of walnuts, with an estimated $248 million in gross income to growers last year.
