What: COMMUNITY YARD SALE AND E-WASTE RECYCLING

Where: North Park, at North Del Puerto and Las Palmas avenues
Info: Citywide community yard sale and recycling event will include a drive-through for pickup and drop-off of used books, U.S. flags for retirement, used cellphones and other e-waste. The citywide yard sale map will be available. The events are a Boy Scout Eagle project organized by James Furze of Troop 81. What: FALL FESTIVAL

Where: Empire branch of the Stanislaus County Library, 18 S. Abbie St.
Info: The library is having its annual Fall Festival, where children can enjoy an afternoon of crafts, games and goodie bags. After a 1:30 p.m. story time, children can participate in a costume parade and might win a prize. The event is sponsored by the Friends of the Empire Library. YESTERYEARS
40 YEARS AGO: The Modesto Board of Education approved broader life and vision-care insurance coverage for the city’s 900 schoolteachers. The plans, initiated by and negotiated by the teachers with the boards in closed session, would become effective the following month. Superintendent Bert C. Corona estimated it would cost the district $8.25 a month per teacher.
