Horse drowns in Stanislaus reservoir. Dogs stuck in canal have better outcome
Emergency crews responded Wednesday to two calls about domestic animals in Stanislaus County waterways. The first involved two dogs that were rescued from a canal near Hickman. The other was a horse that drowned in Woodward Reservoir.
Both calls were on the daily summary from the Modesto Fire Department, which oversees large parts of the county. More details:
Two engines were dispatched at about 2:30 p.m. to the Turlock Irrigation District’s main canal, east of Hickman. Firefighters “safely rescued one of the dogs, and a bystander pulled the other dog to safety,” the summary said. It did not have a precise location or details on how the dogs entered the water.
At about 5 p.m., firefighters responded to a horse that had drowned at Woodward. The animal’s owner was at the scene, as were sheriff’s deputies who had already recovered it.
Details were not available on how the horse got into the reservoir. It stores water for the South San Joaquin Irrigation District and has boating and other recreation.
