A massive fire engulfed a warehouse in an industrial complex west of Tracy on Thursday afternoon, billowing huge plumes of black smoke into the air.

The warehouse is a more than 1 million-square-foot facility located in the Prologis International Park of Commerce, about seven miles west of Tracy. The building was fully engulfed, uncontained and threatening other structures as of 3 p.m.

Fire officials warned residents to stay away from the area and that drivers on Interstate 580 and Highway 205 should expect traffic.

The call that initially came into the South San Joaquin Fire Authority stated the warehouse’s roof was on fire. How the flames expanded so quickly was not clear as of Thursday afternoon, said Nicole Boswell, assistant to SSJFA’s fire chief.

Boswell said crews were performing an “aggressive attack” on the fire and a large amount of resources were being sent to fight it.

The warehouse is owned by Medline and is used as a hub to distribute medical equipment. Boswell said employees were evacuated when the fire broke out, but she could not confirm if everyone made it out safely or if anyone suffered injuries.

High winds, temperature and low humidity are causing the fire to threaten nearby warehouses, Boswell said. Fire officials are still trying to determine what caused the incident.
