The California Highway Patrol will conduct a DUI and driver’s license checkpoint Saturday night at an undisclosed location in north Modesto.

The checkpoint will be between 8 p.m. and 2 a.m. within the unincorporated area of Stanislaus County.

Additional officers will also be deployed that day on Highway 99 to look for motorcyclists and drivers making improper turns, unsafe lane changes, tailgating and driving at unsafe speeds.

In 2024, provisional statistical data showed there were 52 injury crashes and six fatal crashes involving motorcycles in the CHP Modesto jurisdiction.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, 37 people in the U.S. are killed every day in crashes involving an alcohol-impaired driver. In 2022, 13,524 people were killed in motor vehicle crashes involving alcohol-impaired drivers.

“These deaths were all preventable,” the CHP said in a press release. “Officers will be looking for signs of alcohol and/or drug impairment, with officers checking drivers for proper licensing, delaying motorists only momentarily.”

Checkpoints have been shown to be the most effective documented result of any DUI enforcement strategy. Research shows that well-publicized DUI checkpoints and routine DUI patrols can reduce crashes involving impaired drivers up to 20%.

DUI checkpoints are located based on collision statistics and frequency of DUI arrests and chosen with safety considerations for officers and the public.

Drivers found to be impaired can face jail time, fines, fees, DUI classes and other expenses that can exceed $15,000. “Not to mention the embarrassment when friends and family find out,” reads the press release.

The CHP received funding for the checkpoint and motorcycle enforcement operation through a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The CHP Modesto area office will deploy additional enforcement efforts through Sept. 30.
