Late-night crash near Modesto leaves cow dead, driver and passenger unharmed

California Highway Patrol

A crash into a cow northeast of Modesto late Thursday night left two people with minor injuries and the animal dead, the California Highway Patrol reported.

Officers responded to the collision at around 11:40 p.m. near Claribel and Albers roads.

The driver and the passenger had minimal injuries and weren’t taken for medical help, CHP Modesto office spokesperson Officer Aaron Fay said. The cow was partially in the traffic lane by the white roadside line when it was hit by a Honda, he said.

Oak Valley Ambulance treated the patients at scene. The passenger had some cuts.

Fay said that while cows on the roadway are not an everyday occurrence, drivers are wise to be alert to them – especially near rural areas.

Wednesday morning, the Modesto CHP office had a unit positioned, with lights activated, while cattle crossed a road in La Grange. In a Facebook post, it had some fun with the incident: “We were udderly thankful it was a safe and successful crossing,” the post stated. “If you encounter livestock or any animals that are on the roadway, slow down, stay alert, and call CHP. Don’t have a ‘beef’ with traffic safety … steer clear and drive carefully.”
