Person struck, killed by Union Pacific train in Modesto, officials say
A person was struck and killed by a Union Pacific train Thursday morning near Murphy Road and Salida Boulevard in Modesto, according to authorities.
The collision was reported minutes before 5 a.m.., according to Union Pacific spokesperson Daryl Bjoraas.
Bjoraas said the person was trespassing on the railroad tracks when struck by the train. The incident did not occur at a railroad crossing.
The Modesto Police Department said officers responded along with the Modesto Fire Department and Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office after a train conductor reported a possible collision involving a pedestrian.
The individual was located and pronounced dead at the scene, according to police.
Union Pacific Railroad Police are leading the investigation into the incident.
“The train crew was not injured and is being offered support after witnessing the incident,” Bjoraas said in an email to The Bee.
No additional information about the deceased person was immediately available Thursday afternoon.
The Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office is expected to release the person’s identity after next of kin notifications are completed.
