Driver overturns car, crashes into another on 99 at Kiernan in Modesto, CHP says
A 21-year-old Modesto man is facing a charge of reckless driving after speeding off a freeway ramp, overturning his vehicle and crashing into another car Monday afternoon, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred around 1:30 p.m. as the driver exited northbound Highway 99 onto eastbound Highway 219/Kiernan Avenue, CHP spokesperson Officer Aaron Fay said.
Authorities identified the driver of a 2024 white Toyota Camry as Abdulrahman Sekandari, 21, of Modesto. Fay said Sekandari was traveling too fast to safely navigate the right-hand turn on the off-ramp, continuing northeast before the vehicle overturned.
The Toyota then collided with a 2008 silver Honda Civic driven by Emanuel Espinoza Barajas, 19, of Modesto, before coming to rest against a fence.
Sekandari suffered minor injuries but was not taken to a hospital.
The CHP plans to recommend a charge of reckless driving to the Stanislaus County District Attorney’s Office, Fay said.
Traffic lanes in the area were impacted for about 90 minutes as crews responded and cleared the scene.
Fay said speeding and unsafe driving behaviors are a common issue in the Highway 99 and Highway 219 corridor.
The crash remains under investigation.
