Modesto names new fire chief with 30-plus years of experience
The city of Modesto has appointed longtime firefighter Shanon Evans as the new fire chief of the Modesto Fire Department, officials announced Monday.
Evans, who has served as interim fire chief since December, brings more than three decades of fire service experience to the role, according to a city news release. His predecessor as chief was Kevin Wise.
“Chief Evans has risen through service from volunteer firefighter to interim fire chief,” City Manager Joe Lopez said in a statement. “He has an enduring commitment to leadership, training and ongoing support to strengthen fire service delivery across our community and our region.”
Evans began his fire service career as a volunteer firefighter with the Westport Fire District before joining the Modesto Fire Department in 2001. Over the years, he advanced through the ranks as a relief firefighter, engineer, captain, battalion chief and deputy chief.
During his tenure, Evans also oversaw contracts and administrative services for several neighboring communities, including Oakdale and Turlock.
“I feel extremely blessed to be presented this opportunity,” Evans said in a statement. “I have great pride in representing the members of the Modesto Fire Department and our contract agencies. I look forward to continued success and partnership working with staff on our efforts to safeguard life and property in our community.”
City officials described Evans as a leader focused on mentorship and preparing the next generation of firefighters. In his new role, he plans to prioritize efficient emergency medical services and continue strengthening the department’s command staff and regional partnerships.
The Modesto Fire Department serves more than 435,000 residents across Modesto and several surrounding communities, including Ceres, Oakdale, Riverbank and Turlock.
