Modesto Marathon will impact drivers with some road closures. Here’s where

The Modesto Marathon is right around the corner, but drivers should be careful about which corners they turn this weekend.

Several roads will be closed Sunday for the event, with heavy traffic expected in and around downtown, where more than 2,500 runners will begin and end their trek. Drivers should expect delays near the closures and plan detours ahead of this weekend.

The 26-mile course stretches from its start at the intersection of M Street and 11th Street to its turnaround — a farmhouse about 1.3 miles west of Beckwith Road’s intersection with North Gates Road. Shoemaker Avenue, Ninth Street and Brink Avenue/North Avenue will host the longest stretches of the course.

Volunteers and the Modesto Police Department will ensure vehicles do not access the course while runners are on it, but drivers should still heed caution near the route.

The following is a list of road closures in the Modesto area, along with the times they’ll be inaccessible. This list also includes major intersections where events will be held:

All-day closures (5 a.m. to 5 p.m.)

The following downtown areas will serve as the primary race hub and will remain closed for the duration of the event:

  • 10th Street: Closed between L and N streets.
  • 11th Street: Closed from L Street through M Street.
  • N Street: Closed from Ninth to 11th streets.
  • M Street: Closed from Ninth to 12th streets (This section is scheduled to reopen early, at about 8:30 a.m.).

Early morning closures (6:30 AM – 7:30 AM)

Expect short-term closures in these areas during the race start:

  • Poplar Avenue at Needham
  • 12th Street at M Street (both sides)
  • 13th Street between Needham and L streets
  • 14th Street at L Street

Major arteries and lane restrictions (7 a.m. to 2 p.m.)

While some roads remain open, specific lanes will be dedicated to runners:

  • Ninth Street (southbound): #2 lane closed from Briggsmore Avenue to M Street.
  • Ninth Street (downtown): Fully closed between L and O streets.
  • Carpenter Road (northbound): #3 lane closed from Blue Gum to Ninth Street.
  • Tully Road (southbound): #2 lane closed at the intersection with Ninth Street.
  • Woodland Avenue: Closed at Ninth Street.
  • Fire Science Lane/Brink Avenue: Closed to city limits.

Major intersections (rolling reopenings)

The following intersections will likely be managed by MPD. Times indicate when the first and last runners are expected to pass through:

  • Needham and M streets: 7 to 7:30 a.m.
  • Needham and Park streets: 7 to 7:30 a.m.
  • College and Princeton: 7:10 to 7:40 a.m.
  • Tully and Princeton: 7:12 to 7:47 a.m.
  • Ninth and Princeton: 7:14 to 8 a.m.
  • College and Stoddard: 7:30 to 8:15 a.m.
  • Campus and Ninth: 7:30 to 8:20 a.m.
  • Ninth & Briggsmore: 7:18 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Ninth and M Street: 7:35 a.m. to 3 p.m. 

Secondary intersections (rolling reopenings)

  • Virginia and Griswold: 7:07 to 7:50 a.m.
  • Kearney and Princeton: 7:13 to 7:53 a.m.
  • Virginia and Coldwell: 7:30 to 7:55 a.m.
