Driver killed in 6-vehicle crash on I-5 in Stanislaus County, CHP says

A driver was killed Tuesday afternoon in a six-vehicle crash on southbound Interstate 5 just north of Ingram Creek Road near Westley, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The crash was reported at about 4:14 p.m. Emergency personnel responded and found six vehicles with crash-related damage along the freeway, the CHP said in a news release.

The driver of a 2018 Toyota pickup — an unidentified adult male — was pronounced dead at the scene. No other injuries were reported.

According to a preliminary investigation, the Toyota was traveling south in the slow lane as it approached stopped traffic near Ingram Creek Road. The pickup sideswiped the left rear of a 2018 Toyota SUV that was stopped on the right shoulder, pushing it forward into a 2021 Subaru SUV.

The Toyota pickup continued south, sideswiping a 2006 Honda sedan and a 1998 Acura sedan before hitting the rear of a stopped 2015 Freightliner combination vehicle in the slow lane, the CHP said.

Authorities said it is not yet known whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash. The driver of the Toyota was not wearing a seat belt , according to the CHP.

The slow lane of southbound Interstate 5 was temporarily closed while officers investigated the crash.

The identity of the deceased driver has not been released pending notification of next of kin.
