Stanislaus County linen company sells to competitor, lays off almost 90 workers
A Patterson-based company was sold to a multinational corporation, resulting in the layoff of almost 90 workers in Stanislaus County.
Advanced Linen Service, which announced the layoffs on Jan. 5, provides table linens for restaurants and other linen services. It was bought out by a multinational competitor, Alsco Uniforms.
Gordon Hickman, co-owner of Advanced Linen, said he originally wanted to try to buy out the company from his two co-owners, who no longer could manage the company due to health concerns, but he couldn’t afford it.
“I just couldn’t do it,” Hickman said. “So unfortunately, we had to come up with another plan, which is to sell the company.”
Alsco Uniforms provides linen service for several industries, both in the United States and around the globe. Its closest location is in San Jose.
The closure means 89 people will be out of work starting March 6.
Hickman said the facility itself will likely be retained and leased to another company. He that his skilled workers will quickly find positions within the industry.
“I’ve been doing this for 41 years in this community. So, as you can imagine, there’s days that I can’t stand the fact that I won’t have a place to come to every morning like my usual routine for the past four decades,” Hickman said. “But I guess it’s time that I spend more time with my grandkids and my family and do some other things besides just work all the time.”
