Enochs High School was briefly placed on lockdown Tuesday after police received reports of a man walking in the area with what was believed to be a gun, authorities said.

According to the Modesto Police Department, officers responded to reports of a man seen near the campus area carrying what appeared to be a firearm. As a precaution, school officials were instructed to place the campus on lockdown while police searched for the individual.

Officers located the man, who police said was carrying a toy gun and never entered the school campus. He was taken into custody on a mental health hold and was not arrested, police said.

The lockdown lasted approximately nine minutes and was lifted after officers determined there was no threat to students or staff.

“All students and staff are safe, and there is no current threat to the campus,” Modesto City Schools said in a message sent to families and staff.

School operations continued as normal for the remainder of the day.
