Planning a child’s birthday can be a stressful affair. The onslaught of questions ahead of preparation is consuming enough. Should we do it at home or go out? If we do stay home, how can we make it fun? If we go out, who hosts kids birthday parties? What’s our budget? And, hardest of all, is he too old for a magician now?

We can’t tell you whether you should keep the party at home or go out, or whether your kid still likes magic. But this guide to throwing your child a birthday party in the Modesto area provides some at-home entertainment options and local venues with activities meant for a fun birthday.

Bringing the party back home

For families looking to host the party at home, here are a few ways to level up the backyard birthday.

Book an afternoon with G Mobile Modesto, a mobile arcade that will come to your home with arcade games, virtual reality games and more. The services it offers appeal to kids of a wide age range, so long as they’re avid gamers. Custom quotes must be collected from G Mobile.

If you have a younger child who loves “K-Pop Demon Hunters,” superheroes and Disney characters, My Once Upon a Time will bring favorite characters to your home for story times, singalongs, superhero trainings, a painting session with Rapunzel or a swimming party with Ariel. Packages and prices vary.

Cali Valley Rentals provides inflatable water slides and bounce houses, as well as tables, chairs and canopies. Its bundles include deals like a bounce house, tables and chairs for $150 for a kids party.

Our final recommendation for an at-home birthday party is A Love for Lavish, a traveling birthday company that offers patch-making, painting, stuffed animal making, slime making, a kids mini spa, a build-your-own-bouquet bar and supplies for a “boho picnic.” Its packages appeal to younger and older kids.

Celebrating out in the Modesto area

For families with a little artist on their hands, Pottery Magic, 3501 McHenry Ave., and the Dragonfly Art Studio, 1210 J St., are options to consider. Pottery Magic offers a birthday package for $180, covering two hours of pottery painting for eight people. The studio will even bring its services to you for an additional base $75 plus charges based on the distance traveled. The Dragonfly Art Studio also provides an in-studio private party or lesson if you’d prefer a more structured painting activity.

For the kids who like arcade games, bumper cars and laser tag, Funworks, 4307 Coffee Road, and Boomers Modesto, 4215 Bangs Ave., both offer birthday packages. Funworks ranges from $200-$519, while Boomers ranges from $34.99 to $49.99 per person. Dave & Buster’s also has birthday packages from $19.99 to $38.99 per person.

Indoor play spaces are an option for younger kids, and Modesto has Kids Club Modesto, 3440 McHenry Ave., and Play Modesto, 3500 Sisk Road. The latter also has a location in Turlock. Kids Club Modesto allows kids to climb, slide, and go across small zip lines, and its birthday packages range from $325 to $675. Play Modesto’s birthday party packages go from $300 to $800.

For teenagers, Yosemite Lanes, 2301 Yosemite Blvd., offers packages from $190 to $290 for birthday bowling. There’s also the Modesto Escape Room, 912 11th St., which charges $35 per participant for its three adventures of varying difficulty.

As for birthday packages that appeal to wide ranges of kids, a trip to the Micke Grove Zoo in Lodi, a birthday party at Dutch Hollow Farms, 2500 Santa Fe Ave., or a private movie screening of your choice at Brenden Theatres, 1021 10th St., or at the State Theatre, 1307 J St., are also options.
