What will Modesto’s new baseball team be named? Here are the 6 finalists
As Main Street Baseball’s name-the-team contest comes to a close, six entry finalists have been named for the final phase: a vote.
One day after the Modesto Nuts’ last game at John Thurman Field, the City Council voted to approve a lease agreement with the management company for the use of the stadium. Led by Dave Heller, Main Street Baseball then put naming the new Pioneer Baseball League team into the hands of the community.
The contest — sponsored by Stanislaus County-based Cost Less Foods — received 1,015 entries, according to a news release.
“We asked the people of Stanislaus County to help us name the team because this team really belongs to the people who live and work here” Heller said in a statement. “We’ve narrowed the list down to six names that we believe reflect the history, culture and character of the region. “
Team name finalists and how to vote
Voting is open now at www.modestobaseballclub.com or in the form below. It ends Nov. 7.
The winner will be announced at a press conference at Cost Less Foods in Ceres on Nov. 10.
The finalists are:
- Modesto Bombers
- Modesto Glow Riders
- Modesto Graffiti
- Modesto Harvesters
- Modesto Monster Trucks
- Modesto 99ers
The name “Cruisers” was, by far, the most frequently submitted name, according to the release. However, a team in the National Premier Soccer League — the Modesto Cruizers — already has the rights to that name despite the spelling difference.
Other names Main Street Baseball ruled out because of conflicts with other teams and potential trademarking issues are: “Aggies,” “Heat,” and “Mavericks,” “Low Riders,” “Reapers” and “Crushers.”
“Whichever (name) they choose, this team will be family-friendly, fun, affordable and a proud representative of Modesto and its people,” Heller said.
