Modesto Centre Plaza is not taking any bookings for events past December and it appears the venue’s future is uncertain.

City officials have not said why the event and conference center has no plans beyond the end of the year. But Sonya Severo, spokesperson for the city, stated, “The future use of the Modesto Centre Plaza is currently being considered” and there are “active conversations” about what will happen to it.

On Aug. 5, the City Council decided on a downtown location as the site for a professional soccer stadium, which would be built at, and near Centre Plaza. This would require the demolition of Centre Plaza, The Bee previously reported.

City and United Soccer League officials hope to begin construction in fall 2026 and have the stadium’s doors open in 2028.

According to city’s 2023-24 annual comprehensive budget report, “Centre Plaza successfully held 193 events — 35 DoubleTree events, 23 City events and 135 Centre Plaza events.” However, according to the city’s 2025-26 and 2026-27 operating budget, “The facility hosts a post-pandemic average of 120 events annually.”

Keeping the lights on at Centre Plaza also appears to cost the city a lot of money. The 2025-26 budget projects the city to spend about $2.7 million on the facility. But revenue is projected to be just $950,000. .

The funding for events at Centre Plaza was allocated only until the end of this fiscal year. Past that, no money is projected to be spent on events, according to the city’s budget.

Event highlights in the past few years include the 209 Night Car Show, Motorcycle Show, Tattoo Convention, Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) Fights, Modesto Chamber of Commerce Annual Awards Soiree, a Quinceanera Expo, the Economic Development Summit, Cannabis Equity Program Workshops and the return of Edible Extravaganza after a three-year absence.

Modesto on Ice, future events

According to Severo, Modesto on Ice will continue as scheduled. The popular event, which brings a temporary ice skating rink to the city, is typically held from November until February and is held in Centre Plaza’s parking lot.
