A structure fire in Oakdale spread to nearby brush on Friday, burning through more than nine acres of land, according to the Modesto Fire Department.

Firefighters with MFD’s fifth battalion were called at about 1 p.m. to a fire at a detached shop on River Road. The fire spread to two additional structures and ignited brush fires across the road — prompting MFD to call in backup, according to an incident summary.

Crews from Stanislaus Consolidated Fire Protection District’s second battalion, Escalon Fire Department, Ripon Fire Department and Farmington Fire Department responded. The effort was described by MFD as “challenging due to steep terrain and strong winds.” The brush fire was contained to about 9.5 acres.

MFD crews were able to limit damage to the two additional structures through “an aggressive attack.” The shop was “fully engulfed,” according MFD.

The cause of the fire had not been reported as of Saturday morning. Modesto’s Fire Investigative Unit was conducting an investigation.
