According to AAA, gas prices recently dropped to their lowest level nationwide in five years.
“As gas prices keep falling this summer, the big question is how low will they go?” the automobile association said in a Thursday news release.

What is the price of gas in California?
California has the most expensive gasoline market in the country, according to AAA.
As of Friday, Aug. 22, the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline in California was about $4.51, the automobile association said.
That’s roughly the same as July’s statewide average, and $1.37 more per gallon than the national average of $3.14.
Around this same time in 2024, the statewide average price of regular gas was approximately $4.60 per gallon.
How much does gas cost in Stanislaus County?
The average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline in the Modesto area was about $4.33, as of Friday, Aug. 22.
That is 10 cents more than July’s average of $4.23.
Around this time in 2024, a gallon of regular gas cost approximately $4.37 on average in Modesto.

As of Friday, Aug. 22, some Modesto area stations were offering prices below the local average of $4.33, according to the price-tracking site GasBuddy.

“If crude oil prices remain low and barring any major geopolitical events or tropical storms hitting the Gulf Coast, it’s safe to say drivers could continue to see cheaper prices at the pump as summer winds down,” AAA said.
