Longtime Boy Scout leader, teacher dies

Longtime Modesto math teacher and Boy Scout leader Richard DeWolf was the go-to guy for generations of students who needed help -- with just about anything. "Kids would come to him with a struggle with a teacher, a class or a problem with mom and dad," said longtime friend Bob Sesser. DeWolf died last week. He was 80.

Recyclables turning into hot commodity

With prices for aluminum, cardboard and newsprint going up and an economic slowdown putting added pressure on people's pocketbooks, curbside refuse has become a hot commodity for professional poachers.

Turlock book gets centennial boost

The 1972 book "Streams in a Thirsty Land: A History of the Turlock Region" has been reprinted with two additional chapters to coincide with Turlock's centennial celebration this year. The centennial edition of the book, written by Helen Alma Hohenthal and other contributors, includes 64 additional pages. The book is available at the Book Bin in Lily's Emporium, 126 W. Main St.; the Turlock Historical Museum, 108 S. Center St.; and the Turlock Chamber of Commerce, 115 S. Golden State Blvd.

75 YEARS AGO: Garrett Arbelbide, baseball and assistant football coach at Modesto Junior College, signed a contract with the Hollywood baseball club in the Pacific Coast League. Arbelbide was a star for the University of Southern California baseball and football teams. He coached the MJC baseball team to a conference championship during the spring and had helped Fred Earle develop a strong Modesto football program.

25 YEARS AGO: A slow-moving, disintegrating meteorite moved across the Modesto sky, prompting telephone calls to local law enforcement agencies, the Stanislaus County Communications Center and The Bee speculating what it was. A comet? A meteor? Aliens? The National Warning System cleared up the mystery with a broadcast saying that the object was indeed a meteor. -- Karen Aiello
