Modesto’s ‘No Kings’ protest begins at 10th St. Plaza with hundreds in attendance
Protesters began to gather at Modesto’s 10th Street Plaza around 10 a.m. on Saturday as part of the “No Kings” protests planned nationwide.
By 11 a.m., there were hundreds at the plaza in front of 1010 10th St. Many were holding signs, including one that read: “Immigrants are not the enemy.”
One unidentified protester was detained by law enforcement and taken away from the scene. No other details about the incident were made immediately available.
At least five Modesto Police Department patrol cars were parked across the plaza and officers shouting that wearing bandanas or tactical vests violated municipal code.
Bianca Lopez of Valley Improvement Project was one of the featured speakers. She reminded attendees of their rights and that they should mostly remain quiet when approached by law enforcement.
The protests across the country are billed as a nationwide day of defiance against President Donald J. Trump’s administration and, in particular, its immigration policy and enforcement.
The protests coincide with Flag Day, the commemoration of the establishment of the U.S. Army and President Trump’s 79th birthday. A military parade is scheduled in the afternoon in Washington, D.C.
Modesto protesters planned on marching from the plaza in downtown Modesto to Graceada Park where the protest event is set to begin at noon.
