Sheriff’s Office to conduct DUI checkpoint Saturday using cannabis grant funds

The Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office will conduct a DUI and driver’s license checkpoint on Saturday, June 14, at an undisclosed location within the county, the agency announced this week.

The operation is funded through a grant from the California Highway Patrol’s Cannabis Tax Fund program. Deputies trained in identifying impaired drivers — including those under the influence of cannabis — will staff the checkpoint.

“The goal is to stop and arrest any drunk or drug-impaired driver to keep roads and our community safe,” the Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.

The Sheriff’s Office did not immediately say where or when the checkpoint would take place, but such locations are typically chosen based on crash data and areas known for DUI arrests.

Saturday’s checkpoint is part of a broader push to reduce impaired driving crashes, which remain the second-leading cause of traffic deaths in California.

The Cannabis Tax Fund grant, established following the legalization of recreational marijuana, provides millions annually to local agencies for education, prevention, and enforcement. The Sheriff’s Office has used the funding to bolster its DUI operations and training programs.

The department reminded residents of safe driving practices: use a designated driver if you plan to drink, never drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol, and report impaired drivers by calling 911.

Violators caught driving under the influence may face jail time, license suspension, court fines, higher insurance rates, vehicle towing costs, and other financial burdens — not to mention the risk of causing a fatal crash.

The Sheriff’s Office encourages the public to report tips related to impaired driving by contacting Crime Stoppers at (209) 521-4636 or visiting modestopolice.com/CrimeStoppers.
