Modesto City Schools to offer free lunches to youth again this summer
Modesto City Schools will be serving free, healthy lunches again this year to all youth through its Seamless Summer Feed Program.
The program runs from June 4 to Aug. 1, with closures on Juneteenth (June 19) and Independence Day (July 4). Meals must be eaten on-site at participating parks and community locations. No registration, ID or proof of income is required. Youth 18 and under are eligible to participate.
In recent years, the program has served free lunches to about 1,300 students each summer.
“This program ensures that no child in our community goes without a nutritious meal during the summer break,” said Criss Atwell, senior director of Nutrition Services at Modesto City Schools, in a press release. “We are grateful to our staff and community partners who help make this important service possible each year.”
The Summer Feed Program is part of the federally and state-funded Seamless Summer Option, which enables school districts that take part in the National School Lunch Program or School Breakfast Program to keep serving meals during school breaks in low-income areas. Through the program, MCS is able to streamline operations while ensuring more local youth have access to nutritious meals during the summer.
