A crash involving three vehicles Monday evening temporarily closed southbound Highway 99 in Modesto.

At about 6:10 p.m., emergency units responded to the crash south of the Kansas Avenue onramp. Three vehicles sustained heavy damage and one person was trapped, the Modesto Fire Department reported.

Firefighters extricated the occupant of the vehicle. Two people were taken by ambulance to a local hospital. One person declined medical attention.

Fire officials, assisted by Modesto police, closed the highway, and traffic was diverted around the wreckage onto local streets.

The California Highway Patrol was investigating the incident.
