The Modesto Police Department will conduct a DUI checkpoint Friday night, April 25, from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. at an undisclosed location.

Checkpoint locations are selected based on data identifying areas with a high number of impaired driving-related crashes. The primary goal of these checkpoints is to enhance public safety by removing suspected impaired drivers from the road, according to MPD.

“Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk,” Sgt. Robert Hall said in a Facebook post. “Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improve traffic safety.”

Law enforcement officials also emphasized that impairment isn’t limited to alcohol. Certain prescription and over-the-counter medications can affect a person’s ability to drive. Although marijuana is legal in California for both medical and recreational use, driving under its influence remains illegal.

A first-time DUI offense can cost drivers an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties and result in a suspended license.
