From fingerprinting to photography, kids learn skills at Modesto CSI Camp this summer

Girls and boys can learn the fundamentals of crime scene investigation at Modesto police camps in June and July.

Photography, fingerprint evidence and DNA are just some of the skills participants will learn through the program coordinated with the city’s Parks, Recreation and Neighborhoods Department.

The Modesto Police Department will hold the CSI Camp at the Boy Scout Clubhouse in Enslen Park, 501 Stoddard Ave., from June 23-27 and again July 7-11, from 8 a.m. to noon each day. Cost is $50. The camps are for children ages 8 to 13.

The day begins with roll call, some physical training and visits to Modesto police divisions.

Campers will learn about 911 calls, lifting and matching fingerprints, casting and molding impressions and evidence collection. Instruction will also focus on maintaining the chain of custody.

The week culminates with an exercise in processing a crime scene. T-shirts and snacks are included.
