Update: Coroner IDs cyclist killed in collision with vehicle in north Modesto on Tuesday

A Modesto man died Tuesday night after being struck by a vehicle while riding his bicycle on Sylvan Avenue, east of Oakdale Road, according to the Modesto Police Department. He’s been identified by the Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office as the bicyclist is Jose De Jesus Munoz Casillas, 61.

Officers responded to the intersection of Sylvan Avenue and Wood Sorrel Drive at about 7:36 p.m. following reports of a vehicle-versus-bicyclist collision. Emergency responders found the bicyclist in the roadway with severe injuries. Despite lifesaving efforts, he died at the scene.

A preliminary investigation determined that a white Scion XB was traveling west on Sylvan Avenue when it struck Casillas, who was crossing Sylvan northbound near the intersection.

The Modesto Police Department’s Traffic Unit is investigating the crash. Authorities urge anyone who witnessed the incident to contact Officer Brad Beavers at Beaversb@modestopd.com.
