Update: Stanislaus coroner IDs man killed in single-vehicle crash into orchard near school

Road fatality chryon.

A man was killed Monday afternoon in a single-vehicle crash on South Washington Road, north of Lucinda Avenue in Keyes, according to the California Highway Patrol.

He was identified by the Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office as Keyes resident Roy Bilyeu, 56, of Keyes.

The crash was reported just before 3 p.m. Emergency personnel arrived to find a 2003 white Chevrolet pickup with major damage. Bilyeu was pronounced dead at the scene, CHP officials said.

A preliminary investigation indicates Bilyeu was driving north on South Washington Road when, for unknown reasons, the vehicle veered off the east side of the road. The pickup continued in a northeasterly direction, crashing into several nut trees before coming to a stop. The crash was near Spratling Middle School.

The roadway was temporarily closed between Lucinda Avenue and East Redwood Road while officials investigated, though traffic delays were minimal. The crash remains under investigation.
