A 12-year-old boy from Salida sustained major injuries following a traffic collision on Salida Boulevard and Broadway Avenue Thursday evening, according to a press release from the California Highway Patrol.

At approximately 6:25 PM, CHP received reports of the crash. Upon arrival, emergency personnel found the juvenile lying in the roadway next to a 2019 Acura that had significant collision damage.

According to CHP’s preliminary investigation, the juvenile was riding his bicycle eastward, attempting to cross Salida Boulevard at the north crosswalk, when he entered the intersection on a red light. Meanwhile, 28-year-old Maria Torres of Salida was driving the Acura northbound on Salida Boulevard and entered the intersection on a green light.

The bicycle and the Acura collided, causing the juvenile to be thrown onto the vehicle’s hood before coming to rest on the roadway. The boy, who was wearing a helmet at the time, was quickly transported to Doctors Medical Center with major injuries.

The incident remains under investigation by the CHP.
