Update: Scooter driver fatally struck on Briggsmore was a 99-year-old Modesto woman

Modesto Police Department

The woman fatally struck while riding a mobility scooter along Briggsmore Avenue on Wednesday evening has been identified as 99-year-old Modesto resident Guadalupe Gonzalez.

At about 5 p.m., police officers responded to East Briggsmore just east of Coffee Road. An MPD release stated that despite lifesaving efforts, the rider of the scooter died at the scene.

The preliminary investigation found that both the vehicle and the mobility scooter were traveling west on Briggsmore. There is a bike lane but it was not immediately known if the Gonzalez was using it.

The crash happened about 10 minutes after sunset and police have not said publicly whether the scooter was required to have lighting and, if so, whether it was in use.

The driver of the vehicle that struck Gonzalez remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators, according to the release. The collision remains under investigation.

Witnesses are asked to contact Traffic Safety Officer Kyle Johnson at johnsonk@modestopd.com.
