Modesto resident dead after being hit by car while lying on road. But was crash the cause?

A man struck by a vehicle while lying in the roadway on Ninth Street in the Bystrom area of Modesto on Tuesday evening was declared dead at the scene.

The collision occurred on South Ninth Street, just south of River Road around 6:30 p.m.

According to the California Highway Patrol, a 47-year-old woman driving a Fiat sedan struck the 59-year-old Modesto man, who was lying in the roadway.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver was uninjured and found to be not under the influence.

The Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office identified the man as a Modesto resident, Robert Frost.

The CHP is continuing to investigate and it is undetermined why Frost was lying in the roadway before he was struck and if the collision was the cause of death.

Southbound Ninth Street was temporarily closed at River Road.
