The Modesto Bee

The Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department has concluded that the death of a woman struck and killed by a train on Wednesday morning, Nov. 27, in Riverbank was an apparent suicide. The incident took place near Patterson Road and First Street.

Railroad employees saw the woman, a 61-year-old Riverbank resident, lying on the track just before the train hit her at about 10:30 a.m.

The train was traveling south approaching the overpass at Atchison Road when she was seen, and operators were not able to stop it in time.

A missing-person report on the woman had been filed with the Sheriff’s Department on Wednesday evening.

In its news release reporting the circumstances of the death, the Sheriff’s Department wrote, “We would like to remind everyone who is struggling with mental health or currently in crisis, you can call 988 for the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline or call 911.”
