Fire spreads across three mobile homes in Ceres. Four residents displaced

Modesto Fire Department

A fire broke out at the Lazy Wheels Mobile Home Park in Ceres on Wednesday night, damaging three homes and displacing four residents.

Shortly after crews were dispatched at around 8:22 p.m., firefighters found at least one trailer on fire. The flames quickly spread between trailers, affecting three of them, according to the Modesto Fire Department.

One trailer sustained major damage, while the other two had minor damage.

Four occupants were displaced, and the most damaged home was vacant at the time of the fire. No injuries were reported.

The mobile home park between East Whitmore and Herndon Way off Highway 99 was established over 75 years ago. Fire Capt. Joe Spani said the age of the trailers, their missing panels, exposed insulation and narrow spaces between them make the area more susceptible to fire spread.

“There was also a bit of wind behind the fire, which contributed to its spread,” Spani said. “These older trailers and the vegetation between them create a lot of hazards.”

Firefighters remained on the scene for over two hours to ensure the fire was fully extinguished. “There’s a good amount of little void spaces where fire can kind of sit for a while, and if we don’t get in there and fully douse everything, we can run into a little bit of a rekindle issue,” Spani said. “We had no issues with that after this fire.”

The Stanislaus Regional Fire Investigation Unit is investigating the cause of the fire.
