A commercial truck struck a man standing next to a car on Highway 99 in Keyes early Monday, the California Highway Patrol reported.

Ezequiel Gonzalez Mejia, 41, of Los Angeles suffered major injuries and was taken to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto, a news release said. The nature of his injuries was not reported.

The release said Mejia was standing beside a Kia sedan on the west side of southbound 99, north of Keyes Road, when he was struck just before 6 a.m.

The other vehicle was a Freightliner box truck driven by Raul Urbano Jr., 33, of Woodlake, Tulare County, the CHP said. He was not injured and stopped just south of where Mejia was struck, the release said. Alcohol or drugs are not suspected.

The release did not say why Mejia had stopped on the freeway. It said emergency responders found him lying on the shoulder.
