Stanislaus Sheriff’s Office update: Toddler drowns in canal that’s within 20 feet of home

Breaking News

A Denair toddler drowned Monday evening in a canal that runs just 20 feet from his family’s home, the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office confirmed.

Deputies responded to a call regarding a missing 2-year-old at 6:20 p.m.. While on route, deputies were told the boy had been located in a canal by family and friends on the 4300 block of Swanson Road, about a half-mile away from the residence where he was reported missing, according to Sgt. Erich Layton, a spokesman for the Sheriff’s Office.

The toddler, identified as Greyson Cooper, was brought to the roadway while those who found him waited for first responders. CPR was administered on scene before the toddler was taken to a hospital by ambulance.

The boy was reported to be in critical condition for hours until he was pronounced dead at about 10:30 p.m.

“Though current evidence suggests this to be a tragic accident, law enforcement will complete a thorough investigation. Family has and continues to cooperate with investigators,” reads a Sheriff’s Office release. “We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the young boy during this time.”

The boy’s autopsy found water in his lungs.
