North Modesto two-story home goes up in flames, firefighters forced to briefly retreat
A two-story, 3,400-square-foot home in north Modesto erupted in flames Friday morning, according to the Modesto Fire Department.
Firefighters arrived to the 19000 block of Sunflower Court at about 4:30 a.m. and discovered the home’s attic and roof were engulfed. Crews first operated in “offensive mode” but had to retreat when the home’s roof collapsed, read an MFD release.
Crews used an elevated master stream — a device used to put out fires from above — to knock down some of the blaze before they were able to re-enter the house to fully extinguish the fire.
MFD’s release stated that while firefighters were inside the house, they discovered that it was “being used as a marijuana grow location.” It was not stated if this information was tied to the cause of the fire. MFD wrote that the Stanislaus Regional Fire Investigation Unit was working to determine the fire’s cause and origin.
One firefighter was reported to have sustained “a minor injury” and was treated at the scene.
