Road fatality chryon.

A 36-year-old Newman man was killed in a solo-vehicle crash near Los Banos on Monday night, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The crash happened on Russell Avenue north of Interstate 5. The location of the crash is a rural, unincorporated area of Fresno County among farmland.

The driver crashed his 2002 Honda into an empty irrigation ditch at about 8:45 p.m. The CHP determined that he was not wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

As of Tuesday morning, it was unknown if drugs or alcohol played a factor in the crash.

The identity of the driver was not released by the CHP. The Fresno County Coroner’s Office was not immediately available to confirm it either. Typically, a decedent’s identity is not released until next-of-kin is notified.
