Grandmother and granddaughter hit by a vehicle while on the way to school in Riverbank
A 67-year-old grandmother and her 9-year-old granddaughter were injured when hit by a vehicle on their way to school in Riverbank on Thursday morning, according to Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office.
The pair were crossing the street at the T-shaped intersection of Westgate Drive and Saxon Way when a vehicle struck them at about 8 a.m. There are crosswalks on both streets, but drivers on Westgate have no stop sign.
The scene of the crash is about a quarter mile south of Crossroads Elementary, but it was not confirmed Thursday afternoon that is where the pair were heading.
The grandmother suffered critical injuries and was taken to a local hospital for surgery. The granddaughter was taken by ambulance to a children’s hospital outside the county. The extent of her injuries was unknown as of Thursday afternoon.
The driver of the vehicle stayed at the scene and cooperated with deputies as they conducted their investigation, the Sheriff’s Office said. No arrests were made.
