Three pedestrians killed in Modesto and East Sonora traffic collisions, CHP says

Three people have been killed in pedestrian vs. vehicle collisions in the region since Thursday.

There were two collisions — one on Ninth Street in Modesto and one on Highway 108 in East Sonora, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Ninth Street collision

Two pedestrians, a man and a woman, were killed as they were crossing South Ninth Street in Modesto on Friday night, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The collision occurred at about 6:15 p.m., when a 2007 Honda Civic struck both pedestrians in the No. 1 lane. The Honda was traveling behind another vehicle that was able to swerve out of the way of the pedestrians.

The Honda was unable to do the same and struck both pedestrians. The man was flung into the No. 2 lane, where he was struck again by a 2007 Chevrolet.

The man was taken to Doctors Medical Center, where he died from his injuries. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the CHP.

Officers determined that both pedestrians were not in a crosswalk at the time of the collision. Drugs or alcohol were not determined to be a factor and no arrest was made.

CHP spokesman Officer Tom Olsen said an arrest could happen in the future, if it is either recommended by the Stanislaus County District Attorney’s Office or new evidence emerges.

The man was listed as a 60-year-old Modesto resident and the woman as a Modesto resident of unknown age. Their identities were not available over the weekend.

East Sonora collision

A male pedestrian died after a collision with a vehicle on SR-108 at about 11:55 p.m. Thursday.

The incident occurred when a 2012 Ford Expedition traveling east struck a man who was initially standing on the south shoulder of the road. As the Ford approached the man, he “suddenly stepped into the roadway directly in front of (the) vehicle,” read a CHP release.

The man suffered major injuries and died at the scene. The driver of the Ford was uninjured. It had not been determined whether drugs or alcohol were factors, according to the CHP.

The name, age or place of residence of the man killed was not immediately available.
