17-year-old Riverbank girl killed in train accident in Stanislaus County. Victim is ID’d.
A train struck a pedestrian Monday morning in Riverbank, causing fatal injuries to the teenage girl, the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office said.
The county Coroner’s Office identified the girl as Jacqueline Mendez, a 17-year-old Riverbank resident. A sheriff’s spokesman said she was struck by an Amtrak train.
At about 10:50 a.m., local agencies received a report of a train incident in the Patterson Road area. Sheriff’s deputies, fire and medical personnel began a search for the individual who was struck.
Sheriff’s Sgt. Erich Layton said deputies arriving near the Patterson Road area were redirected to the Atchison Street bridge, where the victim was found under the bridge.
“There aren’t any suspicious circumstances being investigated,” Layton said in an email.
Jacqueline was a Riverbank Unified School District student, the Sheriff’s Office said. An investigation will determine the cause of death.
