A Modesto man suffered major injuries when he crashed his motorcycle Saturday afternoon on winding Del Puerto Canyon Road on Stanislaus County’s West Side, the CHP reported.

The crash happened about 2:10 p.m. about a mile north of Diablo Grande Parkway, said Officer Tom Olsen, a spokesman for the California Highway Patrol’s Modesto office.

Daniel Fitzgerald, 35, was southbound, coming out of the canyon, when he lost control on a right turn and was ejected onto the road, Olsen said. He suffered a back injury that is not life-threatening, Olsen said, and was airlifted to Memorial Medical Center in Modesto. Fitzgerald was alert and talking with officers on scene.

A real-time crash summary on the online CHP Traffic Incident Information Page noted that a firearm needed to be secured at the scene. Olsen said that referred to a standard protocol because Fitzgerald is a Department of Defense employee and was carrying his gun.
