Women dies after being struck by car on McHenry in Modesto

Pedestrian fatality

A woman died at the scene Sunday night after being struck by a car while crossing McHenry Avenue at or near Bowen Avenue, Modesto police report.

The collision occurred about 9:30 p.m., Police Department spokeswoman Sharon Bear told The Bee. The woman was struck by a Saturn, whose driver — a Modesto boy, 17 — remained at the scene and cooperated with officers.

It had not yet been determined early Monday afternoon if the pedestrian was in a crosswalk and/or had the green light to cross, Bear said. Drugs and alcohol do not appear to have factored in the crash, she said.

The pedestrian, tentatively identified as a 48-year-old, died at the scene, Bear said.

Witnesses are encouraged to contact Traffic Investigator Randy Raduechel at Raduechelr@modestopd.com

Reporting by The Bee last month said Modesto has consistently ranked among the worst for traffic crashes among its peer cities across the state. The city was second worst among 67 cities in 2020, the latest available rankings from the California Office of Traffic Safety.

The city was fifth worst in the category of crashes involving pedestrians, with 96 people injured or killed.
