A fatal crash on Interstate 5 in western Stanislaus County on Tuesday stalled traffic and claimed the life of a 26-year-old Arizona man.

The incident involving a head-on collision between a big rig and another vehicle occurred shortly after noon on northbound I-5, just south of Davis Road, between Stuhr and Fink roads, the California Highway Patrol said.

A CHP news release provided details: A Subaru SUV was southbound on I-5, when for unknown reason, the driver allowed the vehicle to enter the center median. The Subaru overturned and went into one of the northbound traffic lanes, colliding with a Peterbilt tractor-trailer rig.

The Arizona man, who was driving the Subaru, was pronounced dead at the scene. Jose Rivaspineda, 50, of Los Banos was the driver of the Peterbilt truck. He suffered minor injuries and was taken by ambulance to Los Banos Memorial Hospital. Authorities withheld the other driver’s name pending notification of family.

CHP said it did not appear that alcohol or drugs were a contributing factor in the collision.

One lane of northbound I-5 was closed until about 3 p.m. while officers investigated the crash and the scene was cleared.

According to a Facebook post, West Stanislaus Fire Protection District, Patterson fire, CAL Fire Santa Clara units and Patterson District Ambulance responded to the crash. Caltrans personnel also assisted with traffic control.
