Modesto honors Fourth of July with 150th parade. How did judges’ picks compare to yours?

A big crowd turned out Tuesday morning for the annual Fourth of July parade in downtown Modesto.

Th Modesto Kiwanis Club and city government put on the event, with help from several sponsors. The city has celebrated Independence Day this way since 1874, four years after its founding.

The judges awarded the Chairman’s Trophy to a combined entry by Roberts Auto Sales and Valley Music Institute. The other honors:

Overall equestrian: Francis Mandel

Individual equestrian: Rosa Lopez

Farm: Dutch Hollow Farms

Antique car (pre-1940): Grapes of Wrath

Classic car (pre-1973): Modesto Mavericks

Custom car individual: F&M Bank

Custom car club: Corvette

Antique car club: Modesto Area A’s

Motorcycle group: Modesto Police Department

Musical group: St. Andrew’s Society

Dance/drill/cheer: Blossom Independent

Military unit: Armed Forces Honor Guard

Color guard: Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3199

Corporate float: Stanislaus Food Products

Ethnic group: Filipino-American Association

Non-profit group: Modesto Junior College

Comical/entertaining: Shriners No. 34

Kids group: Stanislaus Library Foundation.
