Emergency units responded Monday afternoon to a report of a jumper from an overpass onto Highway 99 in Modesto.

Modesto police and other agencies responded at around 3:10 p.m. to Highway 99 in central Modesto. Responders found a man in the middle lane. He was alive and was not struck by any vehicles, a California Highway Patrol spokesman said.

Modesto police Lt. Felton Payne said the man jumped onto the freeway from the H Street overcrossing. He suffered leg injuries and was taken to Memorial Medical Center. Police were expected to put a 72-hour psychiatric hold on the individual.

He was described as a white male and his injuries were not life-threatening. The man’s age was not available.

Payne said several witnesses saw the man climb over the fence on the overcrossing before he jumped.

Emergency units diverted traffic on the Highway 99. Traffic was interrupted for about 35 minutes and then the freeway was open again.
